Slovakia is set to resume consultations with Russia on energy supplies, with a meeting scheduled to take place in Moscow on October 26.
What happened
The Slovakian foreign ministry announced that the Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation will discuss natural gas and oil supplies, as well as civil nuclear energy, alongside other topics such as agriculture, tourism, and culture.
According to state secretary Marek Estok, the Slovak government aims to maintain constructive relations with Russia while prioritizing national interests and adhering to EU commitments.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has been a proponent of keeping dialogue open with Russia, despite the ongoing war, and has criticized EU sanctions on Russia.
The move comes as the EU aims to phase out imports of Russian pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas by late 2027, with Slovakia and Hungary having previously voted against the measures.
