The Democratic Socialists of America's (DSA) platform has been criticized for its perceived contradiction between promising freedom and delivering government control.
What happened
The DSA's platform, dubbed 'Workers Deserve More', uses the word 'free' to describe its socialist vision, but also calls for an all-powerful government to use force to fulfill its goals.
Critics argue that this would lead to the government seizing American businesses, resulting in total control over the American people.
Under such a regime, individuals may hesitate to speak out against the government, fearing retaliation.
The platform also proposes government ownership of essential industries, which could lead to a lack of freedom of speech and a controlled press.
Additionally, the socialists' plan to implement costly government programs, such as universal healthcare and a federal jobs guarantee, would be funded by taking a larger share of individuals' hard-earned income.
Critics argue that this would ultimately limit individual freedom, as people would have less control over their own money and lives.
