A British shipping monitoring organization has warned that the threat environment in the Middle East remains elevated, with a severe risk to commercial traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. This warning comes as US President Donald Trump warned of potential strikes targeting Iran.
The UK Maritime Trade Organization stated that no diplomatic resolution has been achieved, and the regional threat environment remains high. Commercial vessels continue to be targeted, with ongoing military activity sustaining an increased risk to maritime operations.
The organization noted that there is a moderate risk in both the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman due to continued navigation interference and potential mining activity. The Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway through which roughly a fifth of the world’s crude oil flows, is particularly vulnerable.
The warning follows an attempted hijacking of an Israel-bound FlyDubai flight from Dubai, in which the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the pilot and tried to crash the jetliner. The plane was carrying around 170 people, mostly Israeli nationals, and was safely landed in Saudi Arabia after passengers and crew subdued the attacker.
US President Donald Trump has stated that if Iran is found to be behind the attempted hijacking, they will be hit very hard. He also raised the prospect of new strikes against Iran, saying it’s possible that he could ramp up bombing following the November 3 midterm elections.
