Tallinn's War of Independence Victory Column Lights Being Replaced

Tallinn's War of Independence Victory Column Lights Being Replaced
ERR Estonia

The lights on Estonia's War of Independence Victory Column in Tallinn are being replaced due to the end of their lifespan, not a major overhaul.

What happened

The lights on Estonia's War of Independence Victory Column in Tallinn's Freedom Square have been out, but not due to a major overhaul as rumored. According to Ando Voogma, portfolio manager at the Center for Defense Investments, the reason is that the lighting system is being replaced. The current light sources have reached the end of their lifespan, with some having burned out or dimmed.

The column, which commemorates the 1918-1920 Estonian War of Independence, is undergoing routine maintenance. Voogma stated that no major repairs are needed, and the replacement of the light sources is the only work required at this time. The column, nearly 24 meters high and made up of 143 glass plates, is a significant landmark in Tallinn and the focal point of commemorative events such as the Independence Day military parade.

While the column had some issues in its early years, requiring minor works, things have settled down since then. Voogma noted that isolated issues may arise, such as problems with the cladding on the outside of the column, but these are part of routine maintenance and upkeep.
