A 13-year-old has been hospitalized with a rare complication of West Nile virus, as cases of the mosquito-borne illness surge nationwide, with 180 cases reported in Los Angeles County.

What happened

A 13-year-old boy from Long Beach, California, has been hospitalized with a rare complication of West Nile virus. The boy, Joseph Vasquez, was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a condition that causes sudden inflammation in the spinal cord. He was admitted to Children's Hospital Los Angeles after experiencing a range of symptoms, including a mild headache, pain in his legs, and a low fever, which eventually led to a loss of mobility in both legs.

According to his family, Vasquez's health deteriorated rapidly, and he developed severe abdominal pain, a stiff neck, and loss of bladder and bowel control. Doctors determined that the West Nile virus was responsible for his condition after extensive testing. Vasquez's case is part of a surge in West Nile virus cases in Los Angeles County, with 180 cases reported as of October 1, the most in almost 10 years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 987 cases of West Nile virus and 750 cases of neuroinvasive disease nationwide, with 43 states affected. While most people who contract West Nile virus experience mild symptoms, some may suffer from life-threatening brain swelling, infections, and paralysis.

Vasquez's family is urging people to take precautions to protect themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses, such as using insect repellents, wearing long sleeves and pants, and staying indoors during peak mosquito hours. They emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention if symptoms develop or worsen, as their experience with Joseph's illness has shown how quickly a mosquito-borne illness can become a serious medical emergency.
