Thousands of noncitizens are losing eligibility for federally funded Medicaid due to the One Big Beautiful Bill passed by Republicans. The bill tightened eligibility requirements, making refugees and asylees without green cards ineligible for Medicaid covered by federal tax dollars.
States can still choose to provide coverage individually. Lawful permanent residents, minors, Cuban and Haitian migrants, and those covered by the Compacts of Free Association are eligible if they meet other requirements.
According to estimates, nearly 177,000 immigrants in Florida, 28,000 in Arizona, 15,000 to 25,000 in New Jersey, 29,000 in North Carolina, and 11,000 in Washington will lose eligibility.
Noncitizens can still qualify for medical care under Emergency Medicaid. The program change aims to reduce the burden on American taxpayers, who have been paying for health care costs of noncitizens.
