Tropical Storm Rachel has forced the closure of an iconic California beach, with severe flooding threatening millions of residents in Orange County, prompting the city to declare a local emergency and deploy resources to mitigate the damage.

What happened

Tropical Storm Rachel has forced the closure of an iconic California beach due to severe flooding that threatens millions of residents in Orange County. The storm, with sustained winds of up to 60 mph, prompted Newport Beach to shut down all its beaches and piers on Saturday morning.

The decision was made after overnight coastal flooding, high surf, and elevated ocean water levels worsened along the Balboa Peninsula. City personnel are assessing coastal conditions and deploying resources to respond to the changing circumstances.

Orange County crews had rebuilt sand berms and deployed thousands of sandbags in preparation for the storm. However, the high surf and tides, which have exceeded seven feet, continue to threaten waterfront communities. Additional teams have activated pumps and tidal valves to drain flooded streets and prevent ocean water from backing up storm drains.

A coastal flood warning has been issued until Sunday, and a coastal flood advisory will remain in place until Tuesday. Officials have appealed for National Guard assistance, and residents have been advised to avoid walking or driving through flooded streets and standing in large amounts of water.

The Long Beach area in Los Angeles County and San Onofre State Beach's Surf have also experienced similar damage and closures due to high tides. Temporary street closures and parking restrictions may be in place depending on how the storm worsens.
