What happened
U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping concluded their summit in Washington on September 25, with discussions on trade, agricultural deals, and Beijing's support for Iran. Trump warned Xi that any Chinese support for Iran is unacceptable. The two leaders also agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.
The summit saw progress on trade, with the U.S. and China agreeing to reduce tariffs on $30 billion of non-sensitive goods. The U.S. will also consider a preferential trade agreement with China for non-sensitive goods. However, the issue of rare earths remains a point of contention, with the U.S. seeking to reduce its reliance on China.
Xi also pressed Trump to oppose Taiwan's independence, but the U.S. reiterated its unchanged policy toward Taiwan. The U.S. has maintained a one-China policy without recognizing Beijing's sovereignty over Taiwan and has been Taipei's main arms supplier.
