President Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, but Ukrainian officials report that attacks on their energy facilities have continued.
What happened
Trump posted on social media that both parties had agreed to the ceasefire, effective immediately. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was unaware of the agreement and learned about it through the media.
Despite the announced ceasefire, Ukrainian officials reported that Russia carried out further strikes on energy facilities, including one on the outskirts of Kharkiv. The Kremlin stated that contacts between the two sides are ongoing, but did not confirm the ceasefire.
Zelenskyy expressed support for an energy ceasefire, but noted that he had not received approval from the Russian side. He also reiterated his willingness to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries if Russia stops attacking Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
The announcement comes after a dramatic few days in which Trump agreed to a diesel deal with the Kremlin and demanded that Kyiv halt attacks on Russian oil refineries. The US also agreed to lift sanctions on Russian fuel, which Trump said would lead to the release of large quantities of diesel to the global marketplace.
