Nidal Hasan to face death by firing squad for 2009 Fort Hood shooting that killed 13 people and wounded 30, as approved by President Trump.

What happened

Nidal Hasan, a former Army sergeant major, will face death by firing squad for the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, which killed 13 people and wounded 30. President Trump approved the method of execution, as recommended by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

Hasan, who claimed to have launched the attack out of anger over being deployed to Afghanistan and a desire to protect Islamic leaders, was sentenced to death in 2013. He is one of four inmates on death row in the US Army's justice system.

The use of firing squads as a method of execution has been adopted by the Justice Department, along with single-drug lethal injections with pentobarbital. This move is part of a broader push to step up federal executions after a moratorium under the Biden administration.

Only four executions by firing squad have occurred in the US since 1977, with the most recent one taking place in March last year. Five states currently allow executions by firing squad: Idaho, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Utah.
