According to Energy Secretary Chris Wright, President Donald Trump was aware of the potential risks to energy prices before deciding to strike Iran in February. Wright stated that Trump believed preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon was worth the risk of short-term energy price increases.
Wright said that Trump knew his decision could lead to a rise in global energy prices, particularly with energy flows coming out of the Persian Gulf region. Despite this, Trump chose to proceed with the strike, prioritizing the prevention of a nuclear-armed Iran over potential political costs.
The energy secretary also expressed confidence that gas prices would decrease in the coming months. However, he declined to comment on whether Trump would resume military action after the November midterm elections.
