US President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his bid for reelection.
What happened
Trump expressed his support for Netanyahu on social media, praising him as a Great Warrior Prime Minister and a strong partner in combating Iran. The US and Israeli militaries have been engaged in a conflict with Iran since February, and Trump suggested that America needs Netanyahu's leadership to continue this effort.
Netanyahu thanked Trump for his endorsement, stating that Israel has never had a greater friend in the White House. He also warned Americans about the potential consequences of Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, saying it would lead to higher gas prices.
The Israeli election, scheduled for October 27, will see Netanyahu face off against several challengers, including former General Gadi Eisenkot and former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. Polls currently show no clear lead for any candidate.
