What happened
U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that Ukraine should consider replacing its current leader, President Volodymyr Zelensky, in order to end the ongoing war with Russia. Trump stated that Zelensky has been unable to make a deal, and that the war would not have started if he were in office at the time of the Russian invasion.
Trump's comments came after he secured a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin for Russia to supply diesel fuel to the global market. However, Zelensky criticized the deal, saying that the money gained by Russia from its oil exports would be used to fund its war efforts in Ukraine.
The public spat between Trump and Zelensky occurred as peace talks in Miami ended sooner than expected. Ukrainian and European diplomats had been meeting with U.S. negotiators, but Kyiv announced that their team was returning home. The two sides of the conflict have been unable to come to an agreement on key areas of disagreement, including Russia's demand that Ukraine cede control of the Donbas region.
