What happened
Donald Trump has told Ukraine to 'get a new leader' after signing an oil deal with Vladimir Putin. The deal will see almost two million tons of Russian oil imported to the US, a move aimed at shoring up Trump's ratings amid rising fuel costs.
Trump's comments came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hit a key oil hub hours after Trump agreed to lift sanctions on Russian oil. Trump accused Zelensky of ignoring his requests to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries, which were raising prices, especially for diesel in the US.
The diesel pact between Trump and Putin stunned Kyiv, with Zelensky accusing the US president of 'weakness' by caving in to Putin. The move has sparked backlash from voters over the war with Iran, which has helped diesel prices soar.
In the immediate aftermath of the Trump-Putin call, the Kremlin staged a new strike on sleeping Ukrainian civilians, killing seven, including at least three children, and wounding ten. The total number of civilians killed by Russia in three days has risen to almost 90.
