What happened
President Donald Trump made a remark during a campaign rally in Nebraska, stating that Iran could take out a city like Los Angeles or San Diego. The comment sparked criticism from California politicians, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who deemed the remarks as dangerous and potentially treasonous.
However, the White House and Trump's Rapid Response account claim that the remarks were taken out of context. They argue that Trump was speaking about the threat of Iran having a nuclear weapon and the importance of preventing that from happening, rather than suggesting that Iran should be allowed to attack US cities.
The White House communications director, Steven Cheung, also defended Trump's comments, stating that they were clearly about the threat posed by a nuclear-armed Iran and that the media's reaction is not rooted in reality.
