What happened
Typhoon Champi made landfall in Taiwan, resulting in one fatality and 350 injuries. The storm caused significant disruptions to air and rail travel, with all domestic flights canceled and rail services suspended. The American Institute in Taiwan closed its office due to the typhoon, and the US-Japan military exercise, Keen Sword 27, was altered due to the storm.
The typhoon brought strong winds and heavy rain to Taiwan, with the Central Weather Administration warning of torrential rainfall and risks of landslides and flooding. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te visited the Central Emergency Operation Center to review preparations and emergency response measures.
The storm also affected the US-Japan military exercise, with the transport vessel Natchan NEO's planned use of Nishinoomote Port being brought forward. Additionally, some planned training on Tanegashima was reduced due to transportation difficulties. Despite the challenges, US and allied forces continued with naval, air, medical, drone, and cyber training during the exercise.
