UK authorities have charged two men in connection with a suspected terror plot to attack a US-run air base in England.
What happened
On October 20, a 24-year-old British national and a 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national were formally charged under the National Security Act. The men were initially arrested on September 27 and October 1, respectively, along with five other suspects, but were released on bail due to insufficient evidence.
The investigation began after a local farmer in Gloucestershire reported suspicious activity, including three vehicles heading towards the RAF Fairford air base. Authorities evacuated nearby houses and examined the vehicles, finding gasoline but no explosives.
Counter-terrorism police believe the plot may have involved Iranian state involvement, although Iran has denied any connection to the incident. The UK's National Counter Terrorism Policing unit is continuing to investigate, examining the level of Iranian involvement and the ambitions behind the plot.
