A recent study by the Centre for Social Justice has revealed a significant shift in the UK jobs market, with migrant workers taking the majority of new jobs created over the past decade.
What happened
According to the report, since 2014, only 734,000 jobs were given to British citizens, while nearly three million jobs were taken by immigrants. The majority of these jobs, 2.5 million, were handed out to migrants from outside of Europe.
The report also found that the number of people in the UK receiving out-of-work welfare benefits rose by 2.3 million since 2020, costing the taxpayer an additional £21 billion. This has led to concerns that the increase in migrant workers has correlated with a rise in state dependency among British citizens.
The study suggests that high immigration has added substantially to the welfare bill, with visas issued to dependent migrants rising by around 400 per cent between 2019 and 2024. The report estimates that £14.3 billion in taxpayer money is currently being handed out to working-age migrants living in the UK, and this is expected to rise to £16.3 billion by 2030.
