What happened
A security incident occurred near RAF Fairford airbase in England on Sunday, prompting a major response from authorities. Five British men were arrested in connection with the incident but were later released on bail. Despite the arrests, no explosives were found at the scene, and the nature of the incident remains unclear.
According to British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, there are strong indications that Iran was involved in the incident. Burnham's comments are the first official confirmation from UK authorities suggesting Iranian involvement. Iran's embassy in London has denied any involvement, categorically rejecting and strongly condemning speculation about their role.
The incident began when three white vans were seen heading towards the airbase, and a local resident reported seeing masked men near the vehicles. A bomb disposal team was deployed, but no explosives were found. Instead, a quantity of petrol was retrieved from the vehicles.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials are considering various possibilities, including whether the incident was a surveillance operation, a test of security, or an attempt to send a message to the British government. The US military uses RAF Fairford for operations against Iran, which has previously warned London against allowing its military bases to be used for such purposes.
