What happened
A suspected terror plot near RAF Fairford, a key military installation used by US forces in Britain, has led to the arrest of five British men. The men, all in their 20s from London, were released on police bail following extensive interviews and inquiries.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that there are strong indications Iran played a part in the incident. Burnham emphasized that the case remains an ongoing, complex, and serious police investigation. The British government is working closely with the US as the investigation continues.
The incident was brought to authorities' attention after a local farmer encountered suspicious vehicles while driving home from a party. The farmer saw masked men, including some wearing balaclavas, scattering into nearby fields and trees, with some appearing to run toward RAF Fairford.
Police initially arrested the men under the Explosives Act and later on suspicion of preparing to carry out a terrorist act. A 400-meter cordon was established around the vehicles, and approximately 85 households were evacuated as military bomb disposal specialists examined the scene. No explosive devices were found, although petrol was recovered.
Iran has denied any connection to the incident, with its embassy in London categorically rejecting and strongly condemning speculation about Iranian involvement. However, Iran's Revolutionary Guards had previously stated that RAF Fairford was a legitimate target.
