What happened
Five men suspected of planning an attack on a US Air Force base in the UK have been released on bail. The men, of Middle Eastern or South Asian descent, were arrested near RAF Fairford, a British Royal Air Force base operated by the US, after a member of the public reported suspicious activity. Armed police detained the men and searched their vehicles, leading to their arrest on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offenses.
The men's release on bail has raised questions, as they were detained for less than 24 hours, despite UK law allowing terrorism suspects to be held for up to 14 days without charge. It is believed that the men were under surveillance by MI5 and Counter-Terrorism police, but a call from a member of the public led to the local police intervening, potentially disrupting the covert operation.
The suspects have been released under intensive counterterrorism supervision, allowing for their potential detention at a later date if more evidence is gathered. The incident has sparked comments from President Donald Trump and UK Defense Secretary Wes Streeting, suggesting that the US and UK authorities were aware of the investigation and had the men under surveillance.
