The 92nd Separate Assault Brigade has shared footage of a groundbreaking operation in which a wounded soldier was evacuated from the front lines using a drone.
What happened
The soldier, an infantryman, was wounded at his position and needed to be evacuated. However, due to intense enemy drone activity and the presence of landmines, conventional evacuation methods were impossible. The brigade's specialists decided to use a heavy-lift hexacopter, originally designed as a bomber, to evacuate the soldier.
The drone, which is about twice the size of the soldier, was modified to carry a human being without flipping over or swaying excessively. The soldier strapped himself into the drone and was flown at a relatively low altitude over blurred-out territory. The drone operator greeted him with a welcome message after the successful landing.
The rescued soldier is currently undergoing treatment and rehabilitation. The brigade's squad leader and programmer, known by his call sign Napalm, praised the soldier as a hero for agreeing to the mission. Ukraine's Ground Forces noted that its drone units are conducting operations that were previously considered science fiction.
