Ukraine's military is facing disruptions due to sudden speed restrictions imposed on Starlink internet, a vital tool for their communications and drone warfare.
What happened
Starlink, operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX, provides high-speed internet to Ukrainian forces, enabling them to maintain strong connections with drone operators over long distances. However, a recent 100mph speed limit imposed on drones connected to Starlink has hindered their ability to intercept Russian drones. According to the Institute for the Study of War, this restriction makes Ukrainian efforts to chase down jet-powered Russian Shahed drones almost impossible.
The restrictions were imposed without prior notice to Ukrainian officials, including Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to President Zelensky. Beskrestnov believes the restrictions may be related to the latest strains between Kyiv and Washington. The move has drawn attention to Starlink and its military-grade version, Starshield, developed for the Pentagon by SpaceX.
Elon Musk has suggested that the US government may be responsible for the slowdown, stating that Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government, and any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military. Musk emphasized that Starlink is a commercial service limited to civilian or defensive activities and cannot be used for offensive military action.
