Ukraine's dependence on Elon Musk's Starlink and Starshield networks has been highlighted after a recent disruption caused significant losses and disruptions to its military operations.
What happened
On October 13, Ukraine's military began experiencing difficulties with Starshield equipment, making it challenging to carry out missions with fast-moving drones. The disruption was caused by a throttling of the Starshield network, which imposed speed limits on Ukrainian drones, causing them to fall out of the sky.
The throttling was attributed to Elon Musk, who later admitted to restricting Starlink's use due to Ukraine's military violating the terms of service. The restriction was lifted after Musk stated that the issue had been resolved, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Starlink and Starshield operations had been restored to their previous speeds.
The disruption had a significant impact on Ukraine's military, with estimated losses of tens of millions of dollars. The country relies heavily on Starlink and Starshield for drone operations, battlefield communications, and intelligence sharing.
The incident has also raised concerns about the control and management of the Starlink and Starshield networks, with Musk stating that any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately the President of the United States.
