An American journalist was attacked and beaten by a group of masked men while covering the olive harvest in the West Bank.
What happened
A group of around 20 masked men, reportedly from an Israeli settlement outpost, descended upon an olive grove near the Palestinian village of Abu Falah and attacked Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine.
Levine, who was wearing a protective vest marked 'PRESS' and a helmet, was surrounded, pushed to the ground, and beaten, with her camera equipment taken from her. Several Palestinians were also injured in the attack.
The US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, condemned the attack as 'vicious & cowardly' and called for the prosecution of those involved, stating that they should 'spend YRS (years) in prison'.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also condemned 'violence against anyone' but referred to the attack as 'alleged' and said its circumstances remain unclear. Israel's police and military have opened investigations into the incident.
Levine, an award-winning photojournalist, remains hospitalized in Tel Aviv as she recovers from hand surgery, broken ribs, and other injuries sustained in the attack.
