The United States and China have agreed to reduce tariffs on a wide range of products. The agreement, announced on Monday, will see each country cut tariffs on $30 billion worth of products, totaling $60 billion. This move is expected to benefit both nations, with the US gaining improved market access for its exports to China, and China gaining reduced tariffs on imports from the US.
The products affected by the tariff cuts include toys, sports equipment, and Christmas decorations from China, as well as agricultural products from the US. According to the US Trade Representative, the deal will unlock improved market access for about 30% of US exports to China, including agricultural products, seafood, cosmetics, and medical devices.
The agreement follows a meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping last week. The US Trade Representative described the deal as a victory for Americans, stating that it will benefit consumers with imports from China and improve market access for US exports.
The tariff rates on over 90% of the products on the lists will be at most-favored-nation levels, removing nation-specific tariffs and leaving only standard tariffs charged under World Trade Organization rules. The deal is seen as a significant development in trade relations between the two nations, with the US aiming to pursue fair, balanced, and reciprocal trade with China.
