US and Russia Agree to Energy Ceasefire in Ukraine
CBS News

The US and Russia have agreed to an 'energy ceasefire' in Ukraine, according to President Trump, although details of the agreement are unclear and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said he was unaware of the deal.

What happened

U.S. President Trump announced an 'energy ceasefire' between Russia and Ukraine, stating that both parties have agreed to the ceasefire. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was unaware of the agreement and that Russia had continued to strike Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine wants peace, but questioned whether Russia does. He also stated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have received orders and are awaiting clear details of the dialogue between the U.S. and Russia.

The U.K. and Canadian prime ministers expressed support for the energy ceasefire, with U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham stating that Ukraine is ready if Russia stops its attacks. However, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced the U.S.-Russian deal on diesel supplies, saying it undermines efforts for stability in Europe.

President Trump had previously criticized Zelenskyy's leadership, suggesting he should be replaced and blaming him for high diesel prices. Zelenskyy responded by saying Russia alone is responsible for the war in Ukraine.

A bipartisan group of U.S. Senators called for the Trump administration to reverse its plan to purchase diesel from Russia, stating that it would provide a financial lifeline to Putin while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians.
