Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with US envoys, including Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, in Norway to discuss a diplomatic solution to the war with Russia.
What happened
The meeting came as Kyiv accused the US of withdrawing support crucial to its defense against Russia, a claim that Secretary of State Marco Rubio called “scandalous.” Zelenskyy also held talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb before meeting the US delegation.
A US official described the meetings as “very productive and constructive,” with Ukraine bringing forward new ideas and proposals. The parties made progress in aligning on a coordinated approach to engaging Russia and advancing the diplomatic process.
The US envoys are set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with Kushner participating virtually, to discuss proposals and create a pathway toward direct trilateral and broader multilateral negotiations.
Tensions between the US and Ukraine have risen in recent days, with Kyiv accusing the US of withholding intelligence and imposing restrictions on military operations. Zelenskyy has also criticized the US for delaying the delivery of crucial ballistic missile interceptors and restricting the use of Starshield, a satellite internet service.
