A ceasefire agreement has been reached between Ukraine and Russia, effective immediately, to stop attacking each other's energy industries. The announcement was made by U.S. President Donald Trump on social media. This development comes after a public disagreement between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over a deal that would allow Russian oil to enter global markets.
Zelensky has offered to hold elections in Ukraine, which have been cancelled since 2024, if Russian President Vladimir Putin agrees to a two-month ceasefire. Zelensky stated that he wants peace and is ready for a ceasefire, but also emphasized the importance of security infrastructure for elections to take place.
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has been ongoing, with both sides targeting each other's energy infrastructure. Ukraine has been targeting Russian oil refineries, claiming that oil exports are key to funding the Russian war effort. Russia, on the other hand, has been demanding that Ukraine cede the Donbas region, which Kyiv has refused.
