A Houthi attack on a Saudi airport has killed one American, amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The attack is part of a larger conflict between Iranian-aligned rebels and American-aligned forces.

What happened

A Houthi attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has resulted in the death of one American, according to the State Department. The attack, which occurred on Saturday, also killed 11 others. The victim's name has not been disclosed.

The attack is part of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has seen intense action on the Yemeni front. The Iranian-aligned Houthi rebels are fighting against the American-aligned Saudis, with the internationally recognized Yemeni government claiming to be advancing to retake territory on the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Meanwhile, Iran has continued its campaign against tanker traffic in the Persian Gulf, with a projectile striking a tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday morning. The diplomatic deadlock between the US and Iran remains, with Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary characterizing the US response to Iranian ceasefire conditions as inadequate.

The ongoing conflict has put a strain on energy markets, with only a modest decrease in the war's impact. The national average price per gallon of regular gasoline is $4.36, while diesel is $6.28.
