What happened
A total of 8,227 rapes were reported at American colleges and universities in 2024. The University of Utah had the most reported rapes, with 146 cases, nearly double the number of the next highest school. Most of the alleged attacks at the University of Utah took place in dorms.
Other schools with high numbers of reported rapes include the University of Colorado Boulder, Ohio State University, and Penn State University. In New York, Columbia University had the highest number of reported sexual violence incidents, with 262 cases, including 21 reported rapes on campus.
Columbia University also had the worst record of investigating and taking disciplinary action, with only three cases investigated and one resulting in expulsion. Over a seven-year period, only 9% of reported cases were investigated, and 1% resulted in disciplinary action.
Other New York schools, including NYU, SUNY Albany, and SUNY Binghamton, also reported high numbers of sexual violence incidents. Cornell University reported 166 cases, including an alleged gang rape incident at a fraternity house.
