The United States is preparing to carry out the execution of former Army Major Nidal Hasan by firing squad in December.
What happened
Hasan was convicted of murdering 13 US Army members and attempting to murder 32 others in 2009. He is set to be executed at the scene of the crime. The Trump administration initially considered broadcasting the execution on TV and streaming platforms, but has since decided against it.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth had given the green light for the public execution, but Vice President JD Vance and President Trump reportedly had reservations about the idea. Some within the administration feared that the broadcast could be used as anti-American propaganda or fuel for Islamic extremists.
The execution will still take place on December 3, 2026, but it will not be livestreamed. The decision comes after some streaming services, including TikTok and Newsmax, had already barred the content from their platforms.
