The US Department of Defence has stopped using Anthropic's AI tools, according to an official statement. This decision comes after the company was designated a supply chain risk in February due to its refusal to remove safety guardrails from its products.
Anthropic's AI tools, including its Claude model, were being used by the Pentagon for research, analysis, and intelligence gathering, as well as in military operations against Iran. However, the company's refusal to give the military unfettered access to its AI products led to the designation as a national security supply-chain risk.
The Pentagon had initially set a deadline to phase out Anthropic's tools by late August, but it appears that the process took longer than expected. The company's tools were deeply integrated into the Pentagon's Maven Smart System, making it difficult to remove them quickly.
Anthropic has sued the US government over the designation, calling it unprecedented and unlawful. The company's boss, Dario Amodei, has also expressed concerns about the risks posed by AI and has called for slower development of the technology.
The Pentagon has signed contracts with other major tech companies, including Google, xAI, and OpenAI, and has begun to adopt their tools in some military departments. OpenAI's tools have been more widely adopted in recent months, according to sources familiar with the matter.
