American defense company Anduril has announced a new interceptor system called Steelfin, designed to reshape American and allied war-fighting capabilities. The system is a family of highly-configurable, mass-producible surface-to-air interceptor missiles engineered to deliver cost, volume, and capability overmatch across various threat spectrums.
The Steelfin system is a response to the stark cost disparities between offensive and defensive systems exposed in recent conflicts, such as the Iran war and the Ukraine-Russia war. Enemy countries have been using cheap drones and missiles, while the US and its allies have been relying on expensive systems like THAAD and Patriot.
The US military has been seeking cheaper alternative systems to supplement the high-end systems, and Anduril's Steelfin appears to be a solution. The system offers a common interceptor architecture that produces a family of interceptor missiles, each configurable for a specific mission. It can be fired from land- or sea-based systems and meets the Navy's containerization plan.
The Steelfin system is also protected from supply chain risks and can be produced at scale, with the ability for allied countries to easily integrate, customize, and use the system. The unveiling comes as Anduril announces a new shipyard project and a slew of new military contracts.
