US Defense Secretary Hegseth has announced six new initiatives to increase the warfighting capacity of the military, including a new combatant command and a program to study the future of warfare.

The US Defense Secretary has introduced several initiatives aimed at enhancing the military's warfighting capabilities.

What happened

Secretary Hegseth recently announced six new initiatives, including the creation of a new 4-star-level combatant command, the Autonomous Warfare Command, which will focus on next-generation technology and autonomy.

Other initiatives include Project Meridian, a study on the future of warfare led by Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and Newt Gingrich, as well as a program called Fortress America, aimed at making military bases more resilient from an infrastructure perspective.

The secretary also announced plans to expand the ROTC program, establish an Office of Religious Affairs, and create a new initiative called The Next Great American Base, although the latter may require a shift in focus to address current deficiencies in base protection.

The success of these initiatives will depend on funding and effective implementation, with the Pentagon requesting over $125 billion in reconciliation money for next-generation technology and autonomy.
