US Democrats May Increase Pressure on Israel Over Settlements

US Democrats May Increase Pressure on Israel Over Settlements
Charisma News

Democrats may prioritize legislation targeting Israeli settler violence if they gain control of the House, while Senate Democrats have introduced legislation aimed at Israel's E1 settlement project.

What happened

A potential shift in power in the US Congress could lead to increased pressure on Israel regarding its settlements in Judea and Samaria. If Democrats gain control of the House, they may prioritize legislation targeting violence by Israeli settlers in the area. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has expressed support for the West Bank Violence Prevention Act, which would authorize sanctions against individuals responsible for violent acts.

The bill has gained support from 174 House Democrats, including some who have traditionally been supportive of Israel. Meanwhile, in the Senate, Democrats have introduced legislation aimed at Israel's E1 settlement project, which would require sanctions against companies and individuals involved in constructing or financing settlements in the area.

Israeli officials have argued that the E1 project is necessary for the country's development, while critics claim it would divide the West Bank and make a contiguous Palestinian state more difficult. The outcome of the upcoming election will determine the trajectory of US policy on Israel and the West Bank.
