What happened
The US Department of War has increased pay for service members in hostile or dangerous situations for the first time in over 20 years. Hostile Fire Pay will rise to $450 per month, while Imminent Danger Pay will increase to $275 per month. This change affects over 50,000 US service members currently deployed in the Middle East, where 19 have been killed in the conflict with Iran.
The pay increase is intended to better compensate service members for the risks they face. According to the Department of War, Hostile Fire Pay will be given to those exposed to hostile fire, while Imminent Danger Pay will be given to those in areas with a high threat of physical harm or danger.
The announcement comes as the US military continues to focus on rebuilding and reviving its capabilities, with new initiatives including a focus on drones, artificial intelligence, and space warfare. The Department of War also plans to expand officer training and provide spiritual support to troops.
