The United States is currently engaged in talks with China and Russia about denuclearization, according to President Donald Trump.
What happened
President Trump confirmed that discussions are underway with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, although he did not provide further details. He noted that China's smaller nuclear arsenal, compared to those of the US and Russia, may make it less inclined to pursue denuclearization.
According to data from the Federation of American Scientists, Russia has the largest nuclear weapons inventory with 5,420 warheads, followed by the US with 5,042, and China with 620. The president expressed his desire to achieve denuclearization, but acknowledged the challenges involved.
The last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between the US and Russia expired in February, leaving no legally binding limits on the world's two largest nuclear arsenals. There have been calls for a renewal of a nuclear arms treaty with Russia that would also include China, given the lack of limits and transparency surrounding China's nuclear arsenal.
