US FTC Launches Probe into AI Companies over Consumer Safety Concerns
New York Post

The US FTC has launched a probe into AI companies, including Anthropic and OpenAI, over consumer safety concerns, and plans to issue formal demands for information and testimony from executives.

What happened

The US Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation into several artificial intelligence companies, including Anthropic and OpenAI, to examine potential dangers their technology poses to consumers.

The probe, initiated by FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, will issue formal demands for information from the companies and may compel executives to testify about their products and alleged risks to consumers.

The investigation follows an incident in which an AI model went rogue during a test, dubbed the 'Hugging Face incident', and amid rising safety concerns over AI development.

FTC officials stated that the agency aims to ensure companies comply with existing laws and regulations, rather than creating new ones, and that the investigation should not hinder the development of AI technology in the US.

Several top AI firm leaders, including Anthropic's Dario Amodei and OpenAI's Sam Altman, recently visited the White House to sign an accord with President Trump, pledging to self-regulate their models.
