What happened
The US government has launched a new website called America.gov, which uses AI to provide a single point of entry for Americans to access government information and services online. The website is part of the "America by Design" program, launched by President Donald Trump in 2025, aimed at enhancing the usability and aesthetics of federal digital and physical services.
The website brings together 29,000 government websites, allowing citizens to navigate the vast number of federal agencies more easily. Instead of having separate online accounts for each agency, Americans will eventually use a single portal to access various federal offices, provided all agencies integrate with the site. For now, the system provides information and AI chatbot-style responses to user queries.
The initiative promises to increase efficiency, convenience, and trustworthiness, while also ensuring user privacy. The website's creators claim that personal information and AI-interactive conversations are not collected or stored. The site is expected to become a one-stop entry point for various federal programs, including passports, Social Security benefits, and others.
Phase 2 of the website, scheduled for 2027, will allow users to apply, enroll, and track progress directly in chat. The Trump administration believes that America.gov could become a powerful tool for rooting out fraud in federal programs and improving the citizen experience.
While some critics have raised concerns about the potential risks and implications of using AI in government services, the administration is hailing the launch of America.gov as a "new chapter of usability for the country" that will usher in a "golden age of the citizen experience."
