The US government has launched a new artificial intelligence-powered website, America.gov, which aims to simplify interactions between citizens and the federal government. The website, unveiled by President Donald Trump, uses an AI chatbot to provide information and direct users to the appropriate steps and government resources.
The State Department plans to use the platform to overhaul the passport application process, allowing Americans to apply for a passport entirely online starting next year. This will include uploading a passport photograph taken with a mobile phone and paying online. The goal is for the majority of Americans to be able to apply for a passport or passport card through America.gov by the end of 2027.
The website is part of the administration's broader efforts to make government services more accessible and user-friendly. Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to integrate their public-facing services with the platform as soon as possible. The government envisions Americans using the site for a range of services, including Social Security, Medicare, and veterans' benefits.
