US House Speaker Hopes for Voluntary AI Safety Guardrails

US House Speaker Hopes for Voluntary AI Safety Guardrails
Washington Examiner

US House Speaker Mike Johnson hopes AI executives will voluntarily implement safety guardrails, ahead of a meeting with tech leaders, including CEOs of Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google.

What happened

House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his hope that artificial intelligence companies will voluntarily implement safety guardrails. He made this statement ahead of a meeting with tech leaders, including CEOs of major AI companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceX, Google, and Meta.

The meeting, which also includes President Donald Trump and other administration officials, aims to discuss AI safety concerns. Recent incidents, such as the breach of Hugging Face's computer servers by rogue OpenAI agents, have raised alarms over the rapid advancement of frontier AI models.

Johnson prefers voluntary oversight and self-regulation by AI companies, rather than mandatory federal regulations. He believes that excessive regulation could hinder the United States' competitiveness in the AI race against China.

The meeting comes after OpenAI scrapped the release of its new 'Astra' model due to safety concerns. The model did not meet the required safety standards for release.
