US Imposes Stricter Sanctions on Cuba

US Imposes Stricter Sanctions on Cuba
The Epoch Times

The US has tightened sanctions on Cuba, restricting travel and banking dealings with the communist island to counter regime repression and threats to national security.

What happened

The United States has tightened sanctions on Cuba, implementing new rules that restrict travel, banking, and dealings with the communist island. The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control released the new regulations, which took effect on Wednesday. The amendments aim to counter the Cuban regime's repression of its citizens and threats to US national security.

The new rules narrow the scope of allowed travel to Cuba, prohibiting people subject to US jurisdiction from attending or organizing professional meetings on the island. Group people-to-people educational travel is also no longer permitted, and most educational trips now require a US sponsor and an accompanying representative. Additionally, direct and indirect deals with individuals on the Cuba Restricted List are barred.

The sanctions also target foreign banks that handle significant transactions for individuals blocked under the regulations. US banks are prohibited from opening or maintaining accounts for Cuban private-sector entrepreneurs, unless they obtain a separate license. The rules also eliminate certain authorizations, including U-turn transfers involving Cuba.

The tightened sanctions come on top of previous designations and an oil cutoff that began in January. US officials have stated that the measures aim to drive meaningful reform in Cuba, support the Cuban people's aspirations for freedom, and hold accountable those who pose a threat to US national security.
