A new initiative has been launched to support American fishermen and protect US consumers from questionable seafood imports.
What happened
US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced the creation of a voluntary 'Made in the USA' label for US-caught fish at a rally in Fort Meyers, Florida, alongside President Donald Trump.
The label aims to differentiate US-caught fish from imported seafood, which is often grown in polluted fish farms abroad with few quality and safety controls.
According to Kennedy, fish caught in the US is of higher quality and safety compared to imports from countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia, where shrimp farms have been known to use antibiotics and destroy local ecosystems.
The initiative also includes the launch of a new government website, seafood.gov, which tracks catches, sales, and infrastructure, and outlines strategies to aid American commercial fishermen.
The New England Fishermen's Stewardship Association has welcomed the move, calling the 'Made in the USA' label a 'major win' for Americans and a way to identify sustainably harvested seafood.
