The US job market has become increasingly competitive, with young graduates facing intense competition from experienced workers for entry-level positions.

What happened

According to Indeed Hiring Lab, entry-level job postings have decreased by 7.5% in May 2026 compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, workers with ten or more years of experience are applying for these junior roles, making up 49% of applications. This shift in the hiring market has left many young graduates struggling to find secure employment.

Daniel Pezzetta, a 27-year-old graduate, has experienced this firsthand. Despite having a master's degree in legislative affairs, he has been laid off twice from jobs in his chosen field and is now working as a field organizer for a congressional campaign. Pezzetta's story highlights the challenges faced by young workers in the current job market.

An expert, Melissa Pennington, a global HR executive, attributes the shift in the hiring market to the aftermath of the pandemic, when employers suddenly had a surplus of workers to choose from. This has led to a situation where companies can hire experienced workers for junior roles at a lower cost.

Pennington advises young workers to focus on developing skills that can help them stand out, particularly technology skills that more experienced workers may lack. She also warns against assuming that another expensive degree is always the answer and suggests considering training certifications or workforce development grants instead.
