What happened
US officials have declared public health emergencies in Florida and Alabama following Hurricane Isaias. The declaration, made by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), allows for temporary waivers of certain health-related requirements to support healthcare providers and patients affected by the storm.
Hurricane Isaias brought damaging winds, storm surges, and heavy rainfall to parts of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and the broader Southeast, resulting in at least four storm-related deaths and hundreds of thousands of power outages.
The public health emergency declaration enables healthcare facilities to continue operating during and after the disaster, with more flexibility to respond to changing needs. This includes temporary waivers for hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare providers to evacuate patients, operate from temporary locations, or cope with staffing shortages without facing normal federal requirements.
Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response Sean Kaufman stated that the federal teams are working alongside state and local partners to support the healthcare services affected by the hurricane. HHS Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr added that the declaration gives healthcare providers in Florida and Alabama the flexibility to keep caring for patients in the wake of Hurricane Isaias.
