US Politicians and Citizens Unite Against AI Surveillance Company
Washington Examiner

US politicians and citizens are uniting against Flock Safety, an AI surveillance company, due to concerns over mass surveillance and privacy invasion, with bipartisan support from senators like Josh Hawley and Cory Booker.

What happened

American politicians and citizens have found common ground in their opposition to Flock Safety, a company that provides AI-powered surveillance cameras. The cameras use automatic license plate readers and artificial intelligence to track and identify individuals, sparking concerns about mass surveillance and privacy.

A recent Senate Judiciary Subcommittee meeting highlighted the bipartisan concern over Flock Safety's technology. Sen. Josh Hawley led the hearing, noting that the company's cameras can identify vehicles with specific stickers, such as those supporting certain politicians or organizations. Experts testified that the technology could be used to track individuals who visit certain locations, such as gun stores, medical facilities, or places of worship.

Chad Marlow of the American Civil Liberties Union explained that the AI-powered cameras could be used to identify women who travel across state lines for an abortion, or to monitor individuals who attend gun shows or protests. Sen. Cory Booker and Sen. Hawley both expressed concerns about the implications of this technology, with Hawley noting that it could be used to create national databases of gun owners or other groups.

The issue has brought together a diverse group of politicians, including Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Bernie Sanders, as well as everyday Americans from different backgrounds and political affiliations. The shared concern over Flock Safety's surveillance technology has created a rare moment of unity in a deeply divided country.
