US Pressure Leads to European Diesel Release

US Pressure Leads to European Diesel Release
The Daily Wire

The Trump administration pressured European governments to release diesel from emergency stockpiles, resulting in a G7 agreement to release 100 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products.

What happened

The Trump administration successfully pressured European governments to release diesel from their emergency stockpiles. After a week of negotiations, the Group of Seven agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products over the next four months.

According to reports, U.S. officials approached European governments individually, warning that Washington could restrict U.S. diesel exports if they refused to release their stockpiles. This move was met with resistance from some European governments, with one diplomat describing the U.S. demand as blackmail.

Despite initial pushback, the G7 ultimately agreed to a frontloaded substantial diesel release within the first 20 days. The agreement also addressed export restrictions, with the countries reaffirming their commitment to refrain from restricting energy exports to one another.

European officials have downplayed the role of U.S. threats in securing the agreement, with French President Emmanuel Macron characterizing the discussions as constructive and emphasizing that the decision was a collective one.

The G7 has also called for increased coordination on refinery maintenance and utilization to boost diesel production. However, the exact amount of diesel or crude each country will contribute has not been specified.
