US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has instructed military commanders to hold a one-day stand-down by October 15, allowing service members to register and cast their votes in the upcoming midterm elections.
What happened
The order aims to provide service members and their families with sufficient time to register, obtain absentee ballots, and vote ahead of the November elections. Hegseth explained that voting for military personnel has been a complex process, with many facing difficulties in obtaining and returning absentee ballots while serving away from home.
In a video statement, Hegseth emphasized the importance of voting and ensuring that service members have every opportunity to participate in the electoral process. He noted that this directive follows a previous effort to increase voting participation among service members, after it was reported that roughly 300,000 American service members were not registered to vote in 2024.
The stand-down is intended to give service members a dedicated day to navigate registration and absentee-ballot requirements before Election Day. Hegseth's order is part of a broader effort to prioritize voting participation among America's men and women in uniform.
