Michigan Democratic US Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed shared his thoughts on the Iranian regime during an interview with ABC News.
What happened
When asked if he condemns the current Iranian regime, El-Sayed stated that the approach of simply condemning or not condemning is odd. He emphasized the importance of figuring out how to make peace with countries and actors one disagrees with.
El-Sayed acknowledged that the Iranian regime has engaged in horrific acts and expressed his support for democracy and human rights. However, he also highlighted the need to consider the bigger picture and what is in the best interest of the US.
El-Sayed referenced the Obama administration's negotiation of the JCPOA, which he believes created a space for containing the nuclear threat and promoting peace. He criticized the current situation, where the US is engaged in a war with Iran, and emphasized the need to promote US values while also working towards peace.
When pressed for a yes or no answer on whether he condemns the current Iranian regime, El-Sayed reiterated that he condemns many of the regime's actions, but emphasized the need to focus on finding a pathway to peace.
